Itchy Scalp & Hair Extensions: A Comprehensive Guide

Hair extensions are an excellent way to elevate your hairstyle by adding length, volume, and versatility. However, many women encounter a common issue: an itchy scalp after their extensions are installed. This often happens when the hair isn’t properly prepared before the extensions are sewn into the braided base. If you’ve experienced itchiness following the installation of hair extensions, rest assured, you're not alone!

Why are your hair extensions itchy?

Aftercare Products - One of the most common reasons for itchiness with hair extensions is the use of incorrect or incompatible aftercare products. Hair extensions require special care to maintain their appearance and health. If you use shampoos, conditioners, or styling products that are not designed for extensions, they can cause irritation.

Understanding Product Ingredients

Common hair products often contain ingredients like sulfates, parabens, and alcohol, which both are harsh on hair extensions and your natural hair as well. These products are known for their cleansing properties but can strip your hair of natural oils and leave your scalp dry. This dryness can lead to itching.

Choosing the Right Products

You can avoid having a dry iritaed scalp by opting for sulfate-free shampoos,  conditioners and products that are specifically formulated for hair extensions. Like the ones mentioned below:

Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse or a Scalp Serum specifically made for sew-in extension hairstyles.

 2. Sweating

Excessive sweating can irritate the scalp and make it itch. Sweat can create a damp enviroment that is sitting next to your braided hair under your sew-in. This could lead to fungus growth. To prevent this try to keep your hair as dry as possible.

For working out: Use a sweat-wicking-headband to absorb excess mositure. After sweating, make sure to cleanse your scalp and hair throughly to remove sweat and prevent buildup.

3. Application Issues

The way hair extensions are applied can significantly impact comfort. Extensions that are applied too tightly or incorrectly can cause scalp irritation. This is particularly true for methods like micro-link or tape-in extensions, where the application needs to be precise to avoid discomfort.

Ensuring Proper Application

To prevent issues, always have your extensions applied by a professional stylist with experience in the specific method you’re using.

If you notice discomfort or tightness, speak up and have the extensions adjusted. A skilled stylist will ensure that the extensions are applied correctly, reducing the risk of irritation.

A Word of Caution: Don't try to cut corners by installing your hair extensions yourself. I know it's tempting, especially if you've always done your own installs. But not installing the hair properly can lead to scalp irritations and having to spend the money in the long run to have the hair re-installed properly.  Let me tell you a story. I'll be quick:

Why DIY Hair Extensions Might Not Be the Best Idea

Let’s be honest: the idea of saving money by installing your own hair extensions can be really tempting. After all, if you’ve managed to tackle your own hair before, why not extensions? I mean, how hard can it be, right? It’s just braiding, sewing, and blending. What could possibly go wrong?

Oh, let me tell you—a lot!

Picture this: my friend Lisa, a self-proclaimed DIY enthusiast, decided to take on the challenge of installing her own hair extensions for her big night out. She had braided down her own hair, she knew her way around a sewing needle, and how hard could it be to just add a few extra inches of fabulousness?

With her trusty mirror and a YouTube tutorial, Lisa got to work. A few hours later, she had what she thought was a masterpiece—a full head of extensions that looked great in her mirror. But fast forward to the next morning, she had to face her reality in the mirror.  The extensions were uneven, some strands were already loose, and Lisa’s head looked like a bird’s nest.

Lisa spent the next few days scratching her head (literally) and tried every trick she knew to alleviate the growing irritation. She even resorted to home remedies like applying aloe vera, but nothing seemed to help. Ultimately, Lisa had to make an emergency visit to a professional stylist to get the extensions fixed. Not only did she end up spending more money than if she’d gone to a pro in the first place, but she also had to endure several days of discomfort.

The moral of Lisa’s story? Don’t try to cut corners by installing your own hair extensions. It’s tempting, especially if you’ve managed other hair DIY projects before. But improper installation can lead to scalp irritations, uneven results, and potentially costly fixes. Save yourself the hassle and the extra expense by visiting a professional. Your scalp—and your sanity—will thank you!

The End....Lol. don't be like Lisa. Go to a professional!

4. Product Buildup

Buildup from hair products, shampoos, and conditioners can accumulate on both your natural hair and extensions. This buildup can contain allergens or irritants that contribute to itching. Over time, it can also affect the overall health of your hair and scalp.

Preventing Product Buildup

To prevent buildup, wash your hair and extensions regularly with a gentle, clarifying shampoo. Ensure that you rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of product. Additionally, consider using a scalp brush to help exfoliate and remove any residue.

5. Natural Hair Shedding

Shedding natural hair is a normal process, but when you have extensions, it can sometimes cause an itchy feeling on the scalp. As your natural hair sheds, it may become trapped or tangled with the extensions, leading to irritation.

Managing Shedding

Regularly brushing your hair and extensions can help manage shedding and prevent tangling. Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush designed for extensions to gently detangle your hair. If you notice excessive shedding or discomfort, consult with your stylist for advice on how to address the issue.

6. Mold

If hair extensions are not washed frequently or are left damp, mold can develop. Mold growth can cause itching, odor, and other scalp issues. This is particularly a concern for extensions that are worn for extended periods without proper care.

Preventing Mold Growth

To prevent mold, ensure that your extensions are washed regularly and thoroughly dried after each wash. Avoid leaving your hair damp for long periods and consider using a hairdryer on a cool setting to ensure complete dryness.

How to Relieve Itchy Scalp

If you’re already experiencing itchiness, make sure that you wash and conditioner your hair before you install your sew-in and add a leave in product that adds moisture to your scalp.

How long should you leave your sew-in installed

Every stylist that I've talked to has given me different answers to this question. Some have said 4-6 weeks. While others recommended no more than 3 months with proper cleansing. But the best advice I've heard is that: Your hair will tell you when it's time to take your sew-in out. The longer you keep that weave in, the more you risk damaging your hair and the weave won’t cooperate with styling as time goes on. Here are a few telling signs that it’s time to say good bye to your weave and give your hair a break:

Your hair is excessively dry.

You have excessive oil buildup on your scalp.

Your braids are loose which will can altar the overall look of your hairstyle.

Your leave-out is no longer blending. (This really looks bad!)

The hair no longer hold a curl. The hair is dry and looks dull.

To keep your scalp comfortable in between installs, consider following these tips:

Use hair products that are designed for sensitive skin and hair extensions. Hypoallergenic options can reduce the risk of irration.

Stay away from products with harsh chemicals, which can dry out your scalp and cause itching.

Maintain good scalp hygiene by reguarly cleansing and mositurizing your scalp. Many hairstylist offer a service to clean your hair extensions while they are stilled installed and provide treatments to keep your scalp mositurized and healthy.
